We’ve got another Inside Fireside Tattoo Club sneak preview for you today! This time it’s with a real friend of the podcast Patrick Paul O’Neil. The group has been holding these Technique Talks that go beyond surface-level conversation about tattoo work. Patrick discusses how over the years that understanding your own process matters—like how he approaches color by building up layers rather than trying to nail everything in one pass. When working with clients, he’s found that what they don't like actually tells me more than what they do like. It gives clearer boundaries for the creative field we're working in.

Patrick also goes over the healing process and how thick skin can desaturate colors, or those strange brown spots that appear in lighter pigments that eventually fade away after a couple years. These are the real challenges we face daily. As artists, we need to pay attention to what our tendencies are, recognize our own limits with composition, and understand that everything has a budget—whether it's detail, color, or negative space. That's the kind of honest conversation about tattooing that actually helps people grow.

We hope you get something from this episode, and consider joining the Inside Fireside Community so you can come along for more of these conversations.

“Open yourself up, stay curious, and just remember to follow your heart and follow your interests.”

— Patrick Paul O’Neil

Patrick Paul O'Neil (@the_burning_jewel) has a unique and distinguished approach to tattooing that focuses on Japanese mythology, history, and representations of the natural world. His style is a harmonious blend of illustrative realism and various traditional Japanese painting styles such as Meiji-era, Nihonga, Rinpa, and Japanese Pottery.

Patrick's artistic background includes a painting degree from OCAD University, where he honed his skills in realism. He spent eight years at Chronic Ink Tattoos, with five of those years working under the mentorship of Tony Hu. Under Hu's guidance, Patrick expanded his artistic repertoire and developed a Neo-Traditional Asian style that combines Japanese and Chinese subjects with a modern western realism sensibility.

Patrick is dedicated to providing his clients with meaningful and enduring tattoos that reflect their unique identity and story, whether it's paying tribute to a loved one, celebrating their heritage, or creating an illustration of their ideal self.

Patrick Paul O’Neil is based in Toronto, ON, Canada and tattoos currently at Seven Eight Tattoo
