A New Approach to Tattoo Apprenticeships

David’s tattoo apprenticeship is anything but conventional. Rather than the typical path of learning under a single mentor, he is traveling across regions, working with some of the top artists that align with his painterly approach. This unconventional method provides him with a broad spectrum of techniques, allowing him to incorporate elements from each mentor into his practice.

Through his journey, David highlights the challenges and advantages of starting out as an experienced artist but a novice tattoo artist. "One of the biggest challenges is not being able to stack paint strokes," he notes, which necessitates a departure from layering methods that are common in painting.

Adapting Painting Skills to Tattooing

David’s transition from painting to tattooing is inspired by the desire to maintain a sense of playfulness and creativity. In painting workshops, he focuses on teaching composition, often starting from abstract forms and building representational images from them. This method is designed to open artists up to the possibilities of assessing compositions without preconceived notions.

  • Painting from imagination using abstract compositions

  • Understanding composition as the core of creating compelling artwork

  • Balancing detail and abstraction for more natural, flowing designs

Overcoming Technical Challenges

Despite his artistic prowess, David faces numerous technical challenges in tattooing. The unpredictability of skin compared to canvas presents constant hurdles. "The ink, you know, for some reason the ink doesn’t go in," he shares, encapsulating the learning curve even experienced artists must navigate.
